7:15 PM Sheriff’s Precinct Level Community Involvement Program / Major Dave Germani Major Germani reported that there are no issues with his department.
The question was asked if there are additional officers that can help with speeding and traffic control when the kids go back to school. The officers are asked to dedicate more time around the schools when they are not on calls.
The question was asked about school zone signs, and what enforcement is taken. Major Germani responded that it depends on whether or not the sign says when children are in session or speeding is enforced only when the light is flashing.
Major Germani provided a copy of the Sheriff’s office annual report from 2008. Green River flooding is a major focus, and the meetings are ongoing. Early warning notifications and evacuation is a major focus.
Community Corrections officer John Conaty also visited our meeting, and spoke to us about people who are under supervision. His phone number is (425) 432-3276, and he works out of the Maple Valley Precinct. 7,600 to 7,800 state-wide convicts who are being let out of prison and should be put under supervision will be not be put under supervision. 500 juveniles will also be let go, and they will do the best they can to keep an eye on these people. The Department of Corrections is under a state budget crunch, and they are focusing on high offenders only. The lower level supervision people will not be supervised any longer. This is per the state legislature. One third of the offender’s sentence can be reduced. It costs $50,000 per year for one person to be in the prison system. Vouchers of $500 a month are being given to some prisoners, and they are eligible for three months of assistance. What percentages of people that are released find a job? John’s expectation is that anyone that is released will find a job. There are 21,000 people that are already being supervised. Some crimes are not eligible for supervision. Crimes against a person are typically supervised. Do you think the legislature took enough data from people like you? John stated that there is only so much in the pie, and the legislature had to make a decision where to spend it. No additional money for support will be spent for people that are being let out early. If you stop reporting to the Department of Corrections, a felony arrest will be issued within 72 hours. If there is a crime that requires services, there isn’t anyone to monitor the person. John has 42 people he is working with, and there are two other people that he works with that have a similar workload.
