7:15 PM: Shoreline Master Program Update-Harry Reinert of King County DDES

In 1972, by referendum, Washington Passed a Shoreline Management Act.In1977 Washington adopted a Shoreline Master Program to manage it’s ~2000 miles of shorelines. This program requires periodic updates. This is the year to effect the current update. Initially there will be an examination of the current situation, including looking at ecology, public access, land use, and historic resources. Then, using current regulations as a guide the present Shoreline Master Program will assessed. On May 21 the initial update was released. The draft includes a refinement of existing shoreline designations to better identify individual needs. The biggest proposed change relaxes prohibitions of docks and/or piers on affected shorelines. Responses by residents are due on June 22 with a second draft being developed and released in the fall of 2007. The county executive, Ron Sims, will release the final document in 2008.
